GAZETTE Page Editor: Anne Gallion SATURDAY, JUNE 7, 2008 A7 THE RECORD Obituaries in the news By The Associated Press EUGENIO MONTEJO Venezuela Eugenio Montejo, a Venezuelan poet and essayist who won the 2004 Octavio Paz prize, died Thursday. He was 70. The poet's publishing house said he died of natural causes. Montejo's poetry is known for its rich texture and was published in numerous books in Spanish. His work also reached a wider audience thanks to the 2003 film "21 Grams" by Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.

In one scene, Sean Penn's character quoted a line from a 1988 poem by Montejo. It reads: "The earth turned to bring us closer. It turned on itself and in us, until it finally brought us together in this dream." Montejo was a literary director at Monte Avila Editores in Caracas. Some of his books include "Elegos" and "Muerte Memoria." BURL PLUNKETT NORMAN, Okla. Burl Plunkett, who coached the University of Oklahoma's women's basketball team to the National Women's Invitation Tournament title in 1994 and helped set the program up for its rise to national prominence, died Thursday.

He was 75. Plunkett died at his Valliant home after a long illness, university spokesman Jared Thompson said. Plunkett went 52-36 in three seasons as the Sooners' coach, immediately prior to Sherri Coale's hiring in 1996. He took Oklahoma to its second NCAA tournament appearance in school history in 1995. Before coaching the Sooners, Plunkett won three state championships, including back-to-back titles at Byng High School in 1975 and 1976.

As a player, he set the Oklahoma high school scoring record during his senior season at Valliant High School in 1951. The mark stood for 28 years. All types of services for all types of people. Some people prefer traditional funeral services. Others prefer cremation.

Some want an elaborate ceremony. Then there are others who don't want any ceremony at all. When it comes to funerals, there are as many options as there are people. And we take pride in being able to say we offer them all. 126 3RD STREET NE MASON CITY, IA 50401 MOORE 641-423-2372 COLONIAL CHAPEL www.
