lowa deaths Elizabeth Gruis Alma Smith THORNTON Elizabeth Gruis, 70, Thornton, died Tuesday at a Mason City hospital. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Thornton, the Rev. Leo Wilson officiating. Burial will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery.

Visitation will be Grarup Funeral Home from 2 p.m. Thursday until time of services. She is survived by her husband, John; two daughters, Mrs. Mervin (Adeline) Muhlenbruck, Swaledale, and Mrs. Jack (Janice) Hegenbrath, Parkersburg, W.

two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Greone) Timmerman, Eagle Grove, and Mrs. Edward (Silvia) Voyna, Charles City; four brothers, Raymond Kessler, Meservey; Leonard Kessler, Lime Springs; Merle and Ervin Kessler, both of Riceville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. William Van Horn AREDALE Funeral services for William Van Horn, 62, originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, were postponed to 1: 30 p.m.

Thursday. Freshman honored Nancy Marie Hammarstedt, 1645 7th Place SW, has been chosen a Presidential Freshman Scholar at Drake University. The award is given to high school students in the top 10 per cent of their class who score well on entrance examinations. Funeral services for Miss Alma Grace Smith, 82, formerly of 324 2nd SE, who died Monday at a Mason City hospital, will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Wayside Chapel of the First United Methodist Church.

The Rev. S. Willard Cunningham will officiate and burial will be in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville. Friends may call at Major Erickson Funeral Home until noon Thursday. Miss Smith came to Mason City in 1909.

She worked many years as a dispatcher for Yellow Cab Company until her retirement in 1955. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the K. B. Circle of the church, and the Rebekah Lodge. She is survived by a brother, Robert W.

Smith, Ojai, Calif. The family requests memorials be given to the First United Methodist Church. Margaret McGuire FOREST CITY Funeral services for Margaret McGuire, 60, who died Tuesday at a Forest City hospital, will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church.

The Rev. John Karal will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Parish scripture service will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Olson-Petersen Funeral Home, Forest City. Visitation is at the funeral home until time of services.

Survivors include a son, Michael, Forest City; a sister, Mrs. Ralph (Lucille) Zebarth, Gainesville, and a brother, John C. Thompson, Forest City. School space problem foreseen Supt. Richard Lashier told Clear Lake School Board members Tuesday evening preliminary information indicates there may be a space problem in grades kindergarten through third next school year, requiring either extra temporary facilities or a system of student transfers.

He said the problem may be not having enough space in the right schools. The superintendent said Elementary Principal Armand Oetken will present more details on the situation at the next board meeting. The board also: -Authorized Lashier to draw up: a 1977-78 school calender based on starting classes Thursday, Sept. 1, 1977, and finishing Thursday, June 1, 1978. Permits -Accepted the resignation, effective Friday, of elementary guidance counselor Diane Luepke, despite board president Crosby Ingersoll's observation that "these contracts always seem to be a oneway street." Luepke requested the release to join her husband who has taken a job in Illinois.

-Authorized Lashier to prepare alternative proposals for replacing Central Elementary windows with new thermal-barrier windows so bids can be let. Also, an open house date of Sunday, Feb. 13, is planned for Phase I of the new junior high here. The 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. affair will be an informal one with guided tours planned for visitors.

Fire truck on order JOICE A new $26,000 fire truck has been ordered for the Joice Fire Department and will arrive this spring. A benefit dance will be held Jan. 28 at the Golden Bubble dance hall south of Wells, to help pay for it. The new truck will have a tank which may be used for hauling water or as a pumper for fighting fires. The new unit will bring the department's capacity to 2.500 gallons.

Organized in 1954, the department still has five of its original members, including Melvin Furness, fire chief; Spencer Anonson, Joe Bakken, Abner Evenson and Earl Hagen. Other members include Ronald Berry, assistant chief; Steve Rodberg, deputy chief; and Danny Martinson, secretary-treasurer; Arden Zielske, Barry Anonson, Roger Christianson, Duane Davis, Ronald Miller, Dana Andreason, Dennis Peterson, Jon Kilen and Donald Trebil. Programs scheduled at NIACC A winter concert by the North Iowa Symphony Orchestra will be presented free for the public at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, in the Fine Arts Forum on the North Iowa Area Community College campus.

Directed by Henry T. Paine, the program will include: "Cosi Fan Tutte," by Mozart: minuet from "'Royal Fireworks Music," by Handel; overture to the ballet "Don Juan," by Gluck; and "Voices of Spring," by Strauss. Also, "My Way," by Revaux and Francois; "Symphony in Major I Adagio molto-allegro con brio," by Beethoven; "Strangers in the Night," by Kaempfert; and "A Mighty arranged by Nelhybel. Orchestra membership is composed of musicians from Clear Lake, Manly, Mason City and Northwood, augmented by students from the NIACC Music Department. "Nursing Assistant," a two-unit course designed to prepare the to function as a hospital aide or orderly, will be offered by NIACC beginning Feb.

2. Completion of the first 60-hour unit qualifies the individual as a geriatric aide. Combining this with the second unit, also 60 hours, completes the qualification for nurse aide or orderly. Persons already holding the geriatric aide certificate may apply for admission directly into the second unit. Each unit consists of 30 hours of classroom theory and 30 hours of clinical experience.

Tuition is $62 and the textbook $6.50. Also required are a white uniform and shoes and a watch with a second hand. Classes will be held in Room 104H of McAllister Hall on the NIACC campus with hours to be announced. The student population at North Iowa Area Community College has a fairly even male-female balance with only a slight nod (53 per cent of the total) to the women.

Women are showing interest in such curriculums as Agricultural Business where two are enrolled, Automotive Service with one, Electronics with four, Horticulture with three and Mechanical Design Technology with three. The Associate Degree Nursing program, on the other hand, has five male enrollees and Practical Nursing one. Pre-baccalaureate (college parallel) shows exactly the same male ratio as the student body as a whole.

Half of the 1,519 regular day students work more than 15 hours per week while attending school and 41 per cent consider themselves financially independent of their parents. Eighty-one per cent are single and more than a third are 20 years of age or older with 23 individuals in the "over 45" category.
